Silently and Very Fast by Cat Valente

Silently and Very Fast is a limited edition hardback about to be released at Capclave 2011. Copies are only available to Capclave members initially, and if there are any remaining they might be available to purchase.

The story itself is lyrical and flowing, snippets of smaller stories telling larger stories and everything meshing into one vast experience across generations. Valente tackles the questions about Humans and Robots (though not that terminology) and in Silently and Very Fast she explores what makes humans human, and what makes robots robots, and what is something was neither and both? How would it develop and what would it’s future be?

I see this primarily as a science fiction story told with fantasy tropes; the science fiction appears amidst layered stories of princes and gods and is essentially a vein through a fantasy rock. I enjoyed the questions Valente poses – just who *are* we and her style is rich and lush in imagery. Great backdrop, lovely ideas, really well executed.
