There’s not a lot I can add to Mondy’s review of this story, however I’m going to try anyway.
This story has made me cry every time I read it. I read it once, fast, and wept and wept. Next time I read it slowly, to try and make sense of how this story of love, family, estrangement, culture, homes, lives, and belonging could be so short and yet pack such an emotional punch.
It’s a woman’s story, told through her son. It is simple, elegantly written. Not a word is wasted. Each scene is eloquent and yet subtle, resulting in a closure that hurts every time I think of it.
This is the first truly amazing and awesome read we have found for this year. Well done to Ken Liu, a new name on the LSS watch list!
